This is a scratchpad for the current work/projects of sound designer Troy Turriate. I specialize in audio for gaming (primarily) but also provide audio for animation, gaming and broadcast media.

I am a classically trained vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, experimental electronic musician and composer. Although I consider myself a sound designer primarily, I am spending just as much time in composition lately and I am perfectly happy with that.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Listen to my new piece for the upcoming game “Mutant Assault” by PikoGames.  I’m not quite sure where we will put it, but this will likely be either the main menu music or tutorial/first level music.  Let me know what you think so far!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You might have noticed I toned down my compositional style significantly for this one.  I think I am finally getting a feeling for the flavor of the game and the rest of the pieces.  Reller, Timpson and the USF Music Theory department might have something to say about my appropriate use of counterpoint and compositional devices in this piece.  They might actually qualify it as a “composition.” The shame!  Also, +1 if you caught the Haydn, “Surprise” symphony reference. Although only classical music nerds or private school types would I suppose; I am definitely the former.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Another mix of Clock Song.  New ending and mastering.  Perhaps went a bit too hard on the compression but it’s a very full mix.  Went with a heavier synth sound towards the end while still aiming for the “wall of sound” feel.  I may tweak this further if I revisit this piece again.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This mix was created for an upcoming compilation put together by Brigid at our community radio station.  If all goes well it should be out in the next month or so. &lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;/span&gt; I finally went back and did revisions to this piece.  This is the first piece I composed start to finish in Ableton (that wasn’t an experiment or sound design fragment).  Compression, EQ,  lots of fine detail and plenty of synth work.  I really got the “wall of sound” synth feel I wanted towards the end.  The rest of the mix is just being enveloped by those sweeping synths.  The original patch I was using had the right idea but I tripled it, did a lot of fine tuning and the result is this intense, emotional and overwhelming analog sound. Writing music, regardless of the medium or tools is composition and therefore an act of creation.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The terms producer/production disregard the intimate compositional process and replace it with a bizarre image. I always visualize a lab technician dispensing music out of some highly advanced scientific machinery, pressing it straight to vinyl and shipping it off to dance clubs, factory style. Granted, electronic music creation in particular is highly technical but this is no reason to pretend it is not a personal creative act. I understand the “production” process extends the technical scope of composition to include mixing, mastering, distribution etc and is not just scoring notes on a page. Regardless, I will not refer to myself as a “producer” and instead maintain the humble title of “composer”.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;All that being said, I have found myself delving deeper into the many facets of electronic music (which I had previously skipped and felt no compulsion towards exploring).  In particular I have been enjoying the various sub genres of hardcore dance music including, gabber, hard trance, hi-nrg, happy hardcore and hardstyle.  I have considered taking the diversion into creating some of these genre specific tracks but genre convention and it’s limitations have always turned me off. As compelling as some of this music is (especially the Australian hardcore scene atm) I will probably keep it to a minimum and continue my focus on sound design.  The fact that I have never attended a rave or dance party reinforces my limited knowledge of the scene.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A few very positive things have come from my recent interest in electronic music. While at first it was more of a technical fascination, I began to challenge myself to create some of the sounds and learn their techniques (just to see if I could). Luckily, it yielded some great techniques which I have been able to apply into sound design.  My procedure for eq-ing, compression and exploiting the stereo image has increased greatly, as has my understanding of the mastering process (and the capabilities of Ableton in this regard).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This whole rant was an odd excursion to begin with.  I think it’s over now. &lt;p&gt;Hey, sorry I can&amp;#8217;t reply properly no wifi here just iPhone.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This is just one part of the foley I did today. One game needed a lot of dirt, soil, leaves and organic sounds.   Those are dead leaves and mulch and unfortunately the only thing around to keep from making a mess was a giant trash bag.  Other sounds were rumbling/crumpling from a heavy canvas bag and simulating a seedling &amp;#8220;growth&amp;#8221; sound using a bubble mailer and the mulch/leaves.  The player is a seed navigating obstacles deep within the earth Trying to make it to the surface.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I actually brought condenser mics, mixer, interface, midi etc but everything was moving so fast and i just needed to get some textures built quickly.  Also did some dialogue recording in that room.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Other games include a virus/antibody game (think Spore or Osmos), a post apocalyptic robot flying game and a dream state platformer with variable gravity.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;More on all this tomorrow. I always take in way too much data.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;2 games worth of sounds and music turned in so far.  Original piece is coming along well but need to finish sound effects tonight.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Our hotel is almost 20 miles away from Full Sail which makes travel inconvenient. Illia stayed with me until 3am while I was working. I somehow miraculously am not as sick. However, I am sacrificing sleep tonight to finish what I can. Then it’s early checkout, implementation and presentation tomorrow, all by 3pm.&lt;/p&gt;
